Bridal Makeup Tips for your Wedding Day!!!

The 2014 wedding season is in full swing and I would love to revisit some of the wedding beauty tips I shared a few years ago, as I believe bridal makeup should be timeless.

A million things have been said and written about looking great on your wedding day, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt to add my two cents 🙂 Getting married is one of the most memorable events in any woman’s life. Therefore, this is one day you want to look your very best. The idea is not to look like a different person… you want to look like a more glamorous and elegant “you”. The key is to enhance your best features without going overboard.

Enter your Makeup Artist!!! Hiring a makeup artist on your wedding day is not a must…it’s an option…a great option (in my opinion). Makeup Artists are professionals who assist in achieving your desired look on your wedding day and take the trial and error out of the equation on such an important day. Your final look adds the finishing touch to a perfect day. Most brides spend a lot of time and money on their special day, therefore making sure their physical appearance is planned out and also matches the events of the day is imperative. Once you have decided on the Makeup Artist of your choice, trust your instincts and:

Trust your Makeup Artist

During the trial session with your Makeup Artist, you will go over the perfect look for your wedding day. But for the Savvy Bride who wants to know more about the bridal makeup process, here are some tips to make sure your bridal makeup look is just as fabulous as your wedding. These tips will reinforce what your Makeup Artist will share with you on your special day:

1) Make it last! You want your makeup to last all day. Primers = Long Lasting Makeup. Begin by applying a face primer before your foundation and eye primer before your eye shadow. Once all your makeup has been applied, use a setting powder to set your makeup. Remember, you will be in the midst of an all day “photo shoot”, therefore touchups are recommended to keep you looking fresh all day. Make sure you have lipstick or lip gloss and blotting powder handy for touch ups. Try to duplicate the Makeup Artist’s kit, if you can. If you can afford it, purchase the foundation, lipstick, blot powder and the blush your makeup artist uses so you can touch up (if they are unable to stay all day). It’s a great investment in the long run, because you can use the items long after your wedding and honeymoon. If you are on a budget, lipstick and blotting powder are the most important for your “Day-of-Arsenal”. The rest of your makeup should stay intact, depending on the products you or your Makeup Artist used. M.A.C has a great blotting powder with a mirror for quick check ups.
2) Avoid like the Plague! Avoid overly shimmery products i.e. eye shadows (in the crease or browbone area. Shim, blush and bronzers. Products for added glow are ok, but shimmery products can make the skin picture oily, so avoid if you have oily skin. Also, stay away from products with SPF 16 or greater because your face could look white or have a blue-ish under cast in flash photography. Last but not least, eyebrows are important for framing the face, so plan ahead and have your eyebrows groomed a few days before the wedding. Messy brows are a big NO-NO!

3) Know your wedding! Think of the type of wedding you are having. Are you having a beach wedding with a flowy chiffon dress, vs. a huge cathedral wedding with a heavily beaded dress? You makeup style should reflect the occasion. You shouldn’t have a heavy, overly done makeup look for a beach wedding.
4) Forget Trends but follow your own rules! Don’t be too trendy with your makeup style. Make sure years from now you will like your wedding look. For instance, will you really love rhinestones on your eyelashes 20 years from now? But at the same time, don’t be afraid of a little bit of color on your wedding day. You don’t have to stick to a neutral palette…venture out. Try playing up one feature. Go “bold” with a deep pink, magenta or coral lipstick, but make the look modern by keeping the rest of your makeup minimal. For example, if you go with bold eyes, choose a nude lip. If you go with bold lips, then tone down the eyes.

5) Lash-it up! Talking about eyelashes…I think false lashes finishes all bridal looks. It opens up the eyes and gives a more intense look to the eye. I especially love the Demi Wispies by Ardell. I also love M.A.C #7 and #33 lashes for a natural romantic look.

6) Give it a Run! A test run that is…by setting up a trial with your Makeup artist. Test runs are the best time to figure out what you like and don’t like. Trying out your makeup look for the first time on your wedding day is a big no-no. Try to avoid stressful situations like this on your big day.
7) Have fun! Take in the moment and focus on the positive. It is important to remember…Makeup can be washed off, so don’t worry if you make a mistake, just start afresh. Give yourself and the Makeup Artist enough time to complete the perfect look with time to spare. Stay true to your personal style and “Tap into the fabulous You” on your special day!

And since a wedding blog post is nothing without pictures 🙂 …below are a few lovely brides and bridesmaids I have had the pleasure of working with since I was last here. I say this as I cover my eyes and proceed to run away.

The Romantic Bride

Lauren was a lovely bride I worked with a few months ago. She was detail-orientated, and when it came to her bridal makeup look, she knew exactly what she wanted. She wanted a natural but romantic makeup look for herself and her bridal party. I have to say, it was fun working with her diverse bridal party. Tracey Spruill of Mane.Edits did a fab job on the bride’s hair and as always I looked forward to working with Hooman of Vesic Photography. He did a great job capturing the images for the bride and groom.

Below are some images of the lovely couple and bridal party by Vesic Photography:

The Stunning Bride

Working with bride’s like Adebola… truly makes my life complete. I know it sounds crazy or maybe corny, but it is because of brides like her that I am able to do what I love. It was a pleasure working with her as her calm personality set the mood for the serene atmosphere. She and her bridal party were soo much fun to work with. They all had great personalities and were super accomplished. Also, a big shout out and many thanks to Tope as she was the perfect makeup assistant on this day. Now on to the pictures…below are some images we captured as the bridal party got ready:

A Before and After of the Stunning Bride

As always, I would like to mention the Lavish Salon for doing an amazing job with the bride’s thick beautiful natural hair. The wedding took place at the Duke Chapel and their fabulous reception took place at the uber cool wedding location, The Cotton Room.

Where Music and Beauty Meet…

I am feeling this song soo much right now… Brings back memories 🙂

I know this remix to ‘I Wanna Be Down” is super old (from 1995 to be exact), but I just love the swag these ladies, Brandy, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Yo-Yo, brought to the game back then.  I also love the simplicity of their makeup and styling in this video. Their beauty was still reflected in an understated kinda way.

And those braids!!! I think it is time for a hair style change **off to call a braiding specialist**

Who else is feeling this oldie but goody?

Late last year my love, Mobyz, got married in London and I had the pleasure of being her makeup artist. She wanted a natural glam look and I think we achieved just that. Check out some of the images from her super fun wedding. I wish I could relive this trip…but oh well, memories are also priceless 🙂

I pray for marriage blessings for she and Charles. And here is to wishing them many, many, many wonderful years of love and happiness together!

Where have you been?? Okay, Okay…Let’s RECAP!!

Hello Guys,

Happy July 4th!!!

I am not sure if I should just act like nothing happened **covers face in shame** or address my absence? For the sake of transparency, I have decided to share. I have been gone for a minute due to a hectic work schedule, personal commitments and a lack of inspiration, but now I am back and I am excited to share about my passion. It is ironic, because I thought about this blog a lot while I was gone and the direction I want to take the blog. I started this blog almost four years ago, and I have changed so much…for one, I am older and I have also matured as an artist. I will still use this space to express myself and share on the topic of makeup, but I want to make sure I am posting what I am truly passionate about and what you guys want to see.

So, let me update you…and let’s start from the last time I was here:

2012 was both amazing and busy. I want to take a moment to reflect on all the great things that happened last year with my Makeup Artistry. I continued to hone my skills. I partook in photoshoots, worked with many fabulous women, was part of a successful makeup seminar in Lagos, attended the makeup show in NYC, trained with Temptu (and I am now an Airbrush Certified Makeup Artist) and I met many amazing makeup artists in my travels. Last but not least, I was able to provide makeup services for many of my lovely brides’ on their special day.

One such bride, was Dale, who got married last year. She is one of my favorite brides to date. I was referred to her by lovely sister who owns Kenjah Bath and Body. The moment I met her, I knew we would be a perfect match. I have to say, she has such an amazing spirit. Her wedding was Chic!!! The ambiance of the location and the feeling in the air was what I like to call “Grown and Sexy”. I loved her dress as it was unique and simple. Her whole bridal party was so much fun to work with. I am blessed be able to work with wonderful people like them.

On to 2013…so far this year has been super busy and interesting. 2013 started out on a great note…We won the WeddingWire Bride’s Choice Awards™ 2013 and it was such a great feeling. This prestigious award recognizes the top five percent of Wedding Professionals nationwide. Thanks to all my beautiful brides…thanks for choosing me to be part of your special day!

I look forward to sharing about what I have been up to so far this year and also posting about requested topics and more.

What have you been up to since we last spoke? Is there anything in particular you would like to see on this blog? I have missed you all.

A Socialite Wedding

Tiffany was a fabulous bride referred to me by April Pyatt of Socialite Events. Working with Tiffany was a dream because she trusted me to deliver. All I did was enhanced her natural beauty. She and her wedding party were super organized and for that reason, we were able to get everyone ready for the special day. By the images below you can see just how beautiful her wedding was. April did an amazing job pulling the whole event together. I wish Tiffany and her husband a life full of joy and happiness.

April was kind enough to provide me with some images which I shared below. Thanks for everything, April 🙂

Where Music and Beauty Meet…

New York fashion week begins tomorrow…ohh how I wish I could have made it this year.

In celebration of this year’s Fashion’s Night Out (which takes place on the first day of fashion week), Rapper, Azealia Banks collaborated with M∙A∙C on a limited edition lipstick called Yung Rapunxel. For those of us who are not in New York City, it is available online today, Sept 5th. Something about this deep blackened purple lipstick reminds me of Cyber lipstick (with a hint of Rebel lipstick, which I love)…so you know I had to place my order promptly. When the lipstick comes in, I will see if I was right about the comparison.

Check out her new music video, 1991, where she rocks the Yung Rapunxel lipstick:
